Tension Fabric Material Guide: 260gsm Polyester & Care
A tension fabric system uses a stretchy, high-resolution 260 gsm polyester textile pulled tightly over a lightweight 32mm push-fit / snap-button aluminum tube frame (with heavy-duty steel base feet) to create a smooth, wrinkle-free display. Graphic sleeves slide over the structure and lock with a hidden bottom zipper to eliminate sagging, and colors stay vibrant, resist fading, and are machine washable. It costs more than a PVC banner on day one, and less by the second or third event.
Two questions come up in almost every enquiry we get: what is the backdrop actually made of, and why not just print a PVC banner? This guide answers both, and shows you how to keep the fabric looking new for years.
What fabric is best for an event backdrop?
For a backdrop you will use more than once, 260 gsm stretch polyester printed by dye-sublimation is the best choice. It pulls flat over a frame with no wrinkles, the colour sits inside the fibre so it does not crack, the matte surface photographs without glare, and it is machine washable. A PVC banner is cheaper for a single outdoor sign, but it creases, reflects camera flash and is hard to store.
The fabric we print on
It is a 260 gsm polyester stretch fabric. The number tells you the weight: one square metre weighs 260 grams. That is heavy enough that the backdrop looks solid and the colours look rich, yet it still folds small enough to go in the carry bag. We sew it into a sleeve that slips over the frame and closes with a zip along the bottom; as you close the zip the stretch pulls the fabric flat.
How the print gets into the fabric
We use dye-sublimation fabric printing. The design is printed with special inks, then heat and pressure turn that ink into vapour, which soaks into the polyester and sets as it cools. The colour ends up inside the fibre, not painted on top, so there is nothing to crack, flake or peel, and it comes through the wash. You also get a soft, matte surface that photographs without glare. This process needs polyester, which is why our fabric is polyester.
Our tip: Run your hand over any printed backdrop. If you can feel a layer of ink sitting on top, it was not sublimated, and it may start to crack along the folds.

Our honest view: if the banner is for a single day out in the rain, PVC is the sensible buy. For exhibitions, launches, ballrooms, media walls, photo spots and anything you will bring out again, fabric pays for itself. You keep the frame, and when your branding changes you only reprint the sleeve.
Indoors, or under cover
Our backdrops are made for halls, ballrooms, offices and covered areas. In the open, a large fabric wall catches the wind like a sail, and days of strong sun will fade any printed colour. For outdoor branding at the same event, add a wind flag banner, which is built for it.
Looking after it
- Washing: unzip, take the fabric off, and machine wash on a gentle, cool cycle with mild detergent and no bleach. Hang it to dry.
- Creases: putting it back on the frame removes most of them. For a stubborn one, steam the back of the fabric.
- Between events: make sure it is completely dry, fold it loosely into its bag and keep it out of the sun and away from sharp edges.
- Frame: wipe the tubes and count the pieces as you pack, so nothing is missing at the next venue.
Questions we get asked
What fabric is a tension fabric backdrop made of?
We print on a 260 gsm polyester stretch fabric, sewn into a sleeve with a zip. It has to be polyester, because dye-sublimation ink only bonds with polyester fibres, and the stretch is what lets it pull flat on the frame.
What does 260 gsm mean?
Grams per square metre: a square metre of our fabric weighs 260 g. Heavier fabric looks more solid and holds colour better. Ours is heavy enough to look premium and light enough to fold into a bag.
Is a fabric backdrop better than PVC?
Indoors, and for anything you will use more than once, fabric wins: no glare in photos, no fold lines, washable, and the frame keeps going with new prints. PVC still makes sense for a cheap one-off banner that will get rained on.
Can I wash the backdrop fabric?
Yes. Unzip it, take it off the frame, and wash it on a gentle, cool machine cycle with mild detergent and no bleach. Hang it to dry, then zip it back on; the stretch pulls out most light creases.
